What’s the Deal with Repellency? An MGK Guide

Newcomers to the pest control industry are often overwhelmed by the variety of materials, active ingredients, and modes of action, and it’s difficult to know where to start.

Whether you’re a new hire, or just need a refresher, the first thing a PMP needs to know is if their product is repellent or non-repellent. Using a repellent product in a situation that calls for a non-repellent can increase the time it takes to control a pest and decrease customer satisfaction. Get a step up on the competition by getting familiar with these products.

Repellents

Repellent materials are those that act as a chemical barrier or knockdown agent. If you’re looking to keep pests away from a home and spiders out of the eaves, then a repellent material is just what you’re looking for. Some are created to work quickly on pests, but don’t provide long-term control. Others are developed to last, but don’t give you the knockdown you want.

Manufacturers have started formulating both fast-acting and long-lasting materials together to give you the best of both, like MGK’s Onslaught® FastCap. This microencapsulated formula is combined with a fast-acting synergist to provide quick knockdown and long-lasting control.

Non-repellents

Non-repellent materials are those that are undetectable to pests, such as baits and insect growth regulators (IGRs). Because pests are unaware of their presence, many more individuals are exposed to the product, which is just what you want if you’re dealing with social pests like ants or yellowjackets, and communal pests like cockroaches. Non-repellents often have a good residual, though this varies from product to product.

MGK’s Sumari® Insecticide is a non-repellent, water-based formulation that works exceptionally well when treating for ants because it will not impact bait palatability. This emulsion in water (EW) formula replaces traditional oil-based solvents with specialized solvents and emulsifiers.
